Of the novels we've reviewed and received, TRICKED rings true with such force, it compels inward examination of our thoughts, prejudices, ambitions and loves. Jolted by the complexities of the characters, we recognized that we knew, have known or may have been at least one of them in our lifetime. Because it is written from the perspective of an African American woman who is neither stereotypically angry nor a product of poverty, a new voice has found its place in commercial fiction. This extraordinary novel reveals a refreshingly gifted new novelist whose story telling ability is forceful, pure, poetic and convincing.
THE STORY:
In first person narratives we learn that McClain Summers is an itellectually brilliant mathematician, trained at Florida A & M, the Wharton Business School and Penn Law. She discovers loopholes in the way securities are purchased, and devises a theory to correct those deficiencies. After taking a job with Joshua Pellman, a world renowned economist, financier and securities expert, she takes the economic world by storm. She fearlessly rides the economic roller coaster with skill and daring, becoming the first African American executive at RJP International, where she helps formulate research to develop a security system to be used to monitor the activities of technological and chemical securities.
After her research begins to reveal disturbing patterns, she soon discovers that except for her sterling success in the business arena, her life has been affected and controlled by a series of shattering secrets, held together by conspirators she calls friends, family, hero, and mentor. She is hounded for what she knows and hunted for who she is.
Among the things that set this book apart are:
The author's witty writing style, often using one word to set forth thoughts that
would take paragraphs to explain. This style keeps the book moving at a break
neck pace.
The use of interesting African American men as lead characters, who are
professional and personable, without vilifying or denigrating them.
The development of complex characters we love and loathe, understand and revile
at the same time
Finally, the ultimate shock, leaving us breathless and eager for the sequel.
McClain's tenacity and her uncanny ability to take crippling hits, recover quickly and strategize for survival, takes us on a thrill ride from which we don't want to return. We want McClain to win. But what is winning in McClaim Summers' world? Our readers have reported that once they began reading TRICKED, they couldn't put it down. What a wonderfully entertaining book!
